Flossie Mae Moncrief Furlow, was born in Prescott, Arkansas on July 9, 1909 to her parents, Tom Moncrief and Alice Lomack Hudson.
She confessed Christ at an early age uniting with Cothran Chapel CME Church in Prescott.
As with most rural Southerners during the time, the family relied on farming as a source of food and income. Flossie stopped attending the Nevada County public schools in the fourth grade to help support her family.
Flossie met and married Samuel “Dolly” Furlow in 1940 and they had two children--Jossie Lee and Willie Lewis Furlow. The family purchased property in Arkansas and opened a café everyone referred to as “The Place.” Flossie was widowed on February 16, 1945 when Dolly passed away suddenly.
Left alone with two toddlers, Flossie continued to reside in Prescott. She did domestic work and continued operating “The Place” to support her family.
Willie Lewis, Flossie’s only son, passed away unexpectedly in 1964 at the age of 20. After his death, she retired and moved to Berkeley, California to live with her daughter Jossie. She united with Galilee Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Robert Mack.
After the arrival of her granddaughter, Ingrid, she devoted most of her time taking care of the family and home while Jossie worked. The three of them made annual bus trips to visit extended family in Arkansas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Wisconsin, Washington, and Detroit.
Flossie became a proud great-grandmother in 1994 and again in 1996 with the birth of Asha and Arielle.
Throughout the years, her love for her family was unwavering. She remained a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend.
Flossie departed this life quietly at her home on December 17, 2010.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, and all of her siblings.
Flossie leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Jossie Lee Furlow, Berkeley, California; granddaughter, Ingrid Rider-Owens and her husband Vincent of Columbus, Georgia; great-granddaughters, Asha and Arielle Owens of Columbus, Georgia; and the Owens family of Arkansas.
