And though you be done to death, what then? If you battled the best you could if you played your part in the world of men, why the critic will call it good. Death comes with a crawl, or come with a pounce, and whether he's slow or spry. It isn't the fact that you're dead that counts, but only how did you die?
Carl Edward Newburn was born on August 18, 1945, in Arkadelphia - Mt. Morriah Community. He was the thirteenth child of Rev. Joseph Samuel and Josie Ella Knox Newburn.
Carl was brought up in church from the day he was born and was surrounded by Christian people. Carl attended the Mt. Morriah Rural School and graduated 8th grade under Professor Cotledge. He later attended and graduated from Peake High School. He further his studies at AM & N College, Pine Bluff now UAPB, where h pursued a career in music. He loved to play different instruments; his favorite being the saxophone.
Carl loved to sing and that's what he did up until December 26, 2010. Although he was very, very sick he sung a verse of “Silent Night” in his deep bass voice. His favorite song was "I want to be Ready". Carl enlisted in the United States Army and served three years. Two of those years were spent serving in the Vietnam War.
After serving his country and receiving an honorable discharge, he was employed at Reynolds Metal Company. He married his sweetheart, Theresa Lambert of Malvern, Arkansas and to that union the Lord added a precious little girl who they named Latanji. Carl gave her the nick-name "Tiny".
Carl was a handy man in the community. He loved to cook and was a very good cook. He cooked for several events at Mt. Morriah Church and the Second of August Picnic in Gum Springs. He cooked for Lawyer McCorkle and other dignitaries while they were at hunting camps. No matter what Carl was doing he always found time to cook at the hunting camps.
Carl will be missed by all who knew him. He had a special buddy, Martin "King" Newborn (Boom Boom). Carl and King could be found singing any time of day or night.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Willie Newburn, Henry Lee Newburn, Cleveland Maurice Newburn, Albert Newburn, Rev. Franklin Newburn and one sister, Carola Newburn Wilson.
Carl Edward will live on in the hearts of his daughter, Latanja Paige and two grandchildren, Ciabria Paige and Anthony Paige, all of Las Vegas, Nevada; the love of his life and best friend, Theresa Lambert Newburn of Las Vegas, Nevada; three brothers, Joseph V. Newburn and Rev. James S. Newburn of Arkadelphia and Rev. Douglas P. Newburn (Linda) of Opelousas, Louisiana; three sisters, Flossie Morgan of Malvern, Evelyn Harrison and Maureen (Freddie) Owens both of Arkadelphia; two sisters-in-law Brenda Newburn of Malvern and Mattie Newburn of Arkadelphia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Mr. Newburn will lie in repose at the funeral home on Friday, January 21, 2011, 2:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The family will greet and receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m.
The celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2011 in Mt. Morriah Baptist Church where Rev. Vernon Moody, Sr., is the pastor. Rev. Kerry Newburn his nephew and the pastor of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Rockford, IL will deliver a message of hope and comfort.
The committal service and earthly resting place will be in Newburn Cemetery. The bearers of the casket will be Josh Newburn, Marlon Morgan, Billy Charles Newburn, Gregg Bullock, Randal Newburn, Shunn Harrison, Quincy Newburn and Blake A. Wilson.
