Calvin L. Kennedy was born in Gould, Arkansas on June 10, 1970. He was the son of Samuel Baker, Sr., and Stella Henderson Kennedy. Calvin grew up in a loving home filled with an abundance of laughter and love.
As a child, Calvin was baptized and became a member of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Gould, Arkansas. He was a team member of Tyson Foods in Pine Bluff, he later moved to Arkadelphia in 2012 and became of member of Greater Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in February 2014 under the leadership of Dr. Lewis A. Shepherd, Jr. Calvin was a dedicated employee of the Arkadelphia Sanitation Department. His favorite pastime was playing dominoes, chess and fishing. He did what he could, when he could to share his love among his family.
“Silk G” as he was often called was a great friend and always displayed brotherly love. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He was a lover of rap music; he enjoyed “talking mess” and was a diehard Razorback fan.
As his health began to decline Calvin moved with his sister, who cared for him with the help of other family members, friends and his fiancée Janie. On Thursday, July 3, 2014, with his family at his side Calvin answered the call that no man can refuse and now rests in the arms of Jesus. He was preceded in death by his mother.
He leaves a legacy of love and his memories will be cherished by his loving children; Jante’ Snell of Nashville, AR, and Vincent (Joanie) Benson of Hot Springs, AR; two beloved grandchildren, Khylie Grigsby of Nashville, AR and Karson Lewis of Nashville, AR; his fiancé, Janie Jones of Arkadelphia, AR; his father, Samuel Baker, Sr., of Port Arthur, TX; five sisters, Donna (Roy) Buckley of Arkadelphia, AR, Charlotte (Wayne) Henderson) of Malvern, AR, Rebecca Baker of Newport, AR, Brandi Lawson of Pine Bluff, AR, and Martina Baker of Gould, AR; fourteen brothers, Henry (Barbara) Rasulallah of Little Rock, Marvin (Tammy) Kennedy of Malvern, AR, Mack (Altrice) Kennedy of Malvern, AR, Gregory Kennedy of Malvern, AR, Kenneth (Rendy Nelson) Kennedy of Pine Bluff, AR, Anthony Summerville of Pine Bluff, AR, Stacy Kennedy of Pine Bluff, AR, Samuel Baker, Jr., of Pine Bluff, AR, Lee Edward Summerville, of Little Rock, AR, Timothy Kennedy of Little Rock, AR, Johnny Ray (Lashonda) Kennedy of Little Rock, AR, Edwin (Melee) Baker of Arizona, Margus (Chelsea) Baker of South Dakota, Antonio Duke of Hot Springs, AR and Orlando Baker of Hot Springs, AR; one aunt, Alma (Elester) Trice of Pine Bluff, AR and Roosevelt (Minnie) Smith of Gould, AR. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, best friend, Don Thurman of Arlington, TX, other friends and his home-boys of the Arkadelphia Sanitation Department.
Public viewing will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014 from 12 noon until 7p.m. The Family will greet friends from 6-7 pm at the funeral home. A home going service to celebrate his life will be held at 1pm on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Greater Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Lewis A. Shepherd, Jr., officiating. Interment will be in Shady Grove Cemetery.
