As the sun was rising on March 16, 1911, it meant the beginning of the life of Celestine Doris Meeks. This beautiful baby girl was the 12th and last child born to Alex and Mattie Brooks Meeks.
Celestine D. Meeks lived and was raised in the Meeks community. At an early age she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and united with the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church family.
Believing God’s word,…..“and the two shall become one flesh….“ Celestine Meeks became Mrs. Celestine Mitchell on May 22, 1937 when she married the handsome and charming R. D. Mitchell.
She later joined Antioch Baptist Church in the Richmond Hill Community where she served faithfully and dutifully as a church clerk. She worked as a seamstress for Levis Strauss in Arkadelphia.
She lived with one of her nieces, Dorothy Oliver Mitchell, who became her caregiver along with Dorothy’s sons, Kevin and Michael. Spending quality time with her family was the highlight of her life. Due to her declining health she moved to Golden Living Center in Arkadelphia, where she shared a room with her sister Flossie.
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the Heaven:…….in her 97th season the sun set on Monday, November 3, 2008 and she now rests in the arms of Jesus.
Those awaiting her arrival are her husband R. D. Mitchell, her parents, her sisters, Flossie M. Dixon, who in her 99th season went home to be with the Lord on October 14, 2008, Arizona Grigsby, Estella Leeper, Tessora Norton, Willie Mae Harrington, Fleeta Thomas; her brothers Lee Meeks, Frank Meeks, Emmett Meeks, Olo Meeks and Hurston Meeks.
Her life was as the fragrance of a beautiful rose, and her influence will live on in the lives of her nieces, nephews, numerous cousins, friends, the Antioch and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church families.
