On December 12, 1954, George and Callie Mitchell Helms welcomed the birth of their fifth child, a boy they named, Billy Ray Helms. Being nurtured in a Christian environment, Billy Ray accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Shady Grove A.M.E. Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He was a faithful and dedicated. He attended and graduated from Arkadelphia High School in 1973. Billy was employed with Scroll Technology for several years and was also employed as a Logger. He was a hard worker and a multitalented individual. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and fishing with his friends. He was a patient man; he always maintained a humble spirit and mild disposition throughout his life. Billy Ray Helms was united in marriage to Diane Hempstead Helms in May 1980. To this union one son, Jordan Randall Helms was born. He passed from this life on April 17, 2015, at St. Vincent’s Infirmary in Little Rock, Arkansas at 7:40 PM. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Amos Helms; and one sister, Goldean Murray. Because love is far greater than death, Billy Ray departs this earth in body only He leaves unforgettable memories with a loving devoted son, Jordan Helms of Little Rock, Arkansas and a devoted and loving sister in Christ, Diane Helms of Camden, Arkansas; four brothers, Mr. George Edward Helms (Madge), Mr. Bobby Helms (Chaney), Mr. Charles Helms (Angela) of Arkadelphia, Arkansas and Mr. Edward Helms (Bonnie) of Shreveport, Louisiana; one aunt, Irene Amacker of Woodsville, TX; several nieces, nephews, relatives, special friends Earl Buckley, Lee Johnson and John Cummings and other friends. He will certainly be missed by all who loved and knew him. Services commemorating his life will be held at Gennesaret Baptist Church on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 11am. Pastor Rex Smith will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday, April 24, 2015 from 1:00pm-7:00pm. The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00pm.
