Terrie Genell Duncan

February 21, 1956 — September 27, 2009

As we retrace the footprints of Terrie Genell Duncan we can only give thanks for the many lives she touched and enriched along life’s journey. A bold and self confident woman, she was blessed to enjoy many of God’s blessings as a child, a sister, a wife, a mother, grandmother and a friend. Terrie Genell Mitchell began her journey of life on February 21, 1956, at Arkadelphia, AR as the daughter of Wilford and Everean Preston Mitchell. She grew up in Pacoima, California where she accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. Terrie was educated in Arkadelphia and was a 1974 graduate of Arkadelphia High School where she excelled as a student and was a member of the high school social group Ladies of Light. Terrie grew up to be a loving, kind and intelligent young woman. Believing God’s Word, “….and the two shall become one flesh….” she became Mrs. Terrie Duncan when she married Rowland Duncan and together they laid a solid foundation for family life based on love, commitment, and Christian values. They later became proud parents of three caring, and devoted children; Rowland, Jr., Tanika, and DeSean. Terrie was a part of that generation that counted motherhood as a virtue because mothers knew the difference between a house and home. So Terrie’s golden accomplishment in life was to make a loving home that would produce a tapestry of memories her family would forever cherish. She was a faithful member of the Pine Street Church of Christ. She was a former employee of the Arkadelphia Human Development Center and was a cosmetology instructor at the Arkadelphia Beauty College. Terrie received her blessing of immortality on Sunday, September 27, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas. During all of her 53 seasons, she made friends across race, gender, faith and creed; she freely offered wise counsel, gave generously to those in need and inspired everyone who crossed her path. Terrie was welcomed home by her parents, her siblings, Barbara Kaye McJimson, Thomas Mitchell and Clyde Mitchell. She leaves to celebrate and honor her life’s journey: daughter, Tanika (Derrick) Flowers of Haker Heights, TX; sons, Rowland Duncan, Jr., of Phoenix, AZ; and DeSean Duncan of Little Rock, AR; sisters, Rhonda (Joshua) Ware, Shemane Jenkins and Hope Mitchell all of Arkadelphia, AR; grandchildren, Jaquez Duncan, I’onne Duncan, Jordan Duncan, Zahara Duncan, Malezia Duncan, Rowland Duncan, III., Ryan Middleton, Chris Watkins, and Kierra Flowers, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, countless friends, and the Pine Street Church of Christ family. Mrs. Duncan will lie in state at Sunday, October 4th from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. A Celebration of Her Life will be held Monday, October 5, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of Pine Street Church of Christ in Arkadelphia where Jim Buie is the pastor. Ealgie Gilber, Sr., will inspire words of comfort. The committal service and final resting place will be in Helms Cemetery.
