Algie Otis Johnson

July 12, 1932 — December 7, 2010

Our world is much richer because we were blessed to have Algie Otis Johnson in our life. He began his earthly sojourn through life on the twelfth day of July, 1932, in Dalark, Arkansas and completed his journey when his immortal spirit soared to its eternal resting place on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. Algie was born to Horace Johnson and Zeola Jackson Johnson. At an early age, he made a personal decision to accept Christ as his Savour. He attended Dalark Elementary School and Sparkman Training School. He continued his spiritual growth by becoming a member of Mt. Olive AME Church. He was a faithful, dedicated and committed serving on the steward baord and as an usher until his health would no longer permit him to attend. He married the beautiful Earnestine, his sweetheart and one true love; and together they laid a solid foundation for family life based on love, commitment, and Christian values. They later became proud parents of five caring and devoted children. When Earnestine made her transition on Tuesday, October 2, 2001, from time into eternity they had been married for forty-five years. He was not a man of many words, but of many virtues. He was a good man and a hard worker. He traveled this road of life and dealt with the stormy and sunny days along the way to the best of his ability with integrity and character. He worked as a boiler room operator for the Ray White Lumber Company. He made friends across race, gender, faith and creed; he freely offered wise counsel, gave generously to those in need and inspired everyone who crossed his path. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Earnestine Johnson. Because love is far greater that death Algie departs this earth in body only. His gentle smile and infectious laugh lives on in the memories, minds and hearts of his children: Carolyn Thomas of Arkadelphia, Shelia Hughes of Arkadelphia, Ramona Hamlin of Arkadelphia, Fredrick Johnson of Dalark and Brad (Amy) Johnson of Gurdon; ten grandchildren, Lakesha Hughes, Brandon Summerville, Terry Hughes, Jr., Kentrel Hamlin, Kayla Hamlin, Kenny Thomas, D’Andre Thomas, Roman Thomas, Markel Johnson, and Antoinette Johnson; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Odessa Nelson of Dalark; Maude Delamar Jones of Louisiana and Frankie Palmer of Arkadelphia; two brothers, George Delamar of Dalark and Oliver Delamar of Oakland, CA; his mother-in-law, Marilyn Shugart, of Arkadelphia; a special niece Sandra Ankton of Arkadelphia; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, countless friends and the Mt. Olive AME Church family. Mr. Johnson will lie in repose at the funeral home on Friday, December 10, 2010, 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The homegoing celebration will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 11, 2010, at Mt. Olive AME Church. Rev. Linda Butler will officiate. The committal service and final resting place will be at Houston-Turner Cemetery in Dalark. Bearers of the casket will be Terry Wright, Carl Johnson, Patrick Nelson, Claude Delamar, Byron Johnson, Michael Johnson, Tony Lockhart, Kenny Hamlin, Carl Daniel, and Aaron Nelson.
