The sweet life of Ellar Mae Jones came to a close on Thursday, March 30, 2023, with her family by her side. She lived a full 90 years and would have celebrated her 91st birthday on Friday, April 7, 2023. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2023, at Williams Funeral Home. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Harrison Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Travell Green, officiating. The interment will be at Harrison Chapel Cemetery.
Ellar Mae was born on April 7, 1933, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She accepted Christ at a young age. She met the handsome, Herbert Jones, Sr., and after an appropriate courtship, they were married. They settled in Delight, Arkansas, and started a family.
She united with Harrison Chapel Baptist Church where she served faithfully as an usher. She worked for Poulan and retired after 20 years. In her spare time, she busied herself in the kitchen cooking, but her specialty was baking sweets. Her pecan pie was an all-time favorite; much like her German chocolate cake, upside-down pound cake, and fruit cake during Christmas. She had a treasure trove full of recipes that she often shared with family and friends. There was no doubt that she knew her way around the kitchen.
She believed the Lord had blessed her to work with her hands and that He gifted her with a "green thumb". She loved flowers of all types. She could grow anything and bring life back to any flower or plant that had died. Her yard was beautifully covered with a variety of flowers which often made her home a tourist attraction. People traveling along Hwy 26 would often stop to pose and take pictures in her yard. She loved the attention and sharing a piece of a flower with guests.
After the passing of her husband, she modeled independence in as much that she painted the interior of her home by herself. She also enjoyed sewing and listening to her radio daily.
Her pilgrimage was modest, but it was full and fulfilling. Her independent spirit, beautiful smile, and strong character will never be duplicated but will leave an impression on the lives of those she touched and enriched along this life’s journey. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ida Mae Green Gilyard, and her husband, Herbert Jones, Sr.
Her memory and love will live in the hearts of her children, Brenda (Kenneth) McDaniel and Herbert Jones, Jr., and his fiancé, Naquia S. Monk; her beloved grandchildren, Kendall (Carla) McDaniel, Lartina (Patrick) Jones-Dennis, Channing (LeAnn) McDaniel, and Lashad Jones; and a bonus sister, Minnie Hunter. She also leaves those who love her and the Harrison Chapel Baptist Church Family.
Pallbearers will be Herbert Jones, Jr., Lashad Jones, Ketrick Dennis, Channing McDaniel, Kendall McDaniel and Quincy McDaniel. Honorable to mention are the Ushers and Deacons of Harrison Baptist Church.
