Floyd Matlock was born to the union of Wylie Matlock and Bessie Turner Matlock on July 4, 1947, in Sparkman, Arkansas. He grew up in a loving and God-fearing home who parents taught self-respect and respect of others
He accepted Christ at a young age and attended service with his mom who was a member at Harmony Missionary Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Sparkman Training School. He worked for several years and retired from Goodwill Industries. Floyd maintained strong ties with his family and friends, often reaching out to share laughter and warmth, a testament to his loving nature.
Floyd was known for his vibrant personality and his love for celebrating life, particularly during summer festivities where his birthday coincided with the Fourth of July – a day he looked forward to every year, when fireworks sparkled in the night sky much like the joy, he brought to those around him.
A passionate fan of the Green Bay Packers, Floyd was known for his spirited discussions about the game and his unwavering support of his favorite team. He found great joy in the soulful sounds of Smokey Robinson, which accompanied his daily life and provided the soundtrack for many cherished memories. An avid news and politics enthusiast, Floyd’s curiosity about the world around him kept him well-informed and deeply engaged in meaningful conversations. Every morning, he looked forward to savoring his coffee while taking a short walk, connecting with nature and the vibrant life surrounding him.
Floyd lived a life rich in experiences and connections, leaving an indelible mark on those who were fortunate enough to know him. He passed from this life on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, with his children in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wylie and Bessie Matlock; brothers, T.W. Matlock, Wylie Matlock, Jr., Shandria Matlock, and Eddie Herman Matlock; sisters, Marcella Matlock, Betty Lou Dickerson Bobbie Jean Matlock Daily, Zettie Marie Matlock Brooks, and JoAnn Matlock.
Floyd will be dearly remembered by his dedicated family, including his children: Floyd (Brianna) Matlock, Jr., James (Cheryl) Matlock, Dennis Matlock, Vincent (Tammy) Matlock and Vanessa Matlock; 11 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. He also leaves his sisters, Emma Jean Perry, Betty Joe (Kenneth) Owens, Carolyn Ann Johnson and Cora Mae Adams; his brothers, Eddie Lee (Edie) Matlock, and Larry Matlock, as well as a host of niece, nephews, other relatives and friends. His warmth, laughter, and countless stories will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched.
Public viewing from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Friday, December 6, 2024, at the funeral home. A celebration of life will take place at Harmony Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 12:00 PM with Rev. L. A. Craig, eulogist. Floyd will be laid to rest later that day at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Vincent Benson, Vincent Locke, James Matlock, Darron Johnson, Ricky Gibson, Bobbie Louis King, and Charles Bivens. Honorable to mention are Edward Henley, Phillip Gary, Larry Johnson, Ricky Craig, Glen Harison and James Dickerson.
