Geneva Hughes Hunter’s journey of life began in Sparkman, Arkansas on October 20, 1953, in Manning, Arkansas. She was the oldest child of Sammy and Juanita Reed Hughes. She accepted Christ at a young age and united with Macedonia Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Wade. She later united with Greater Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Arkadelphia and lastly Covenant Community Church in San Antonio, Texas.
She was a 1971 graduate of Sparkman High School. Intelligent, shy, humble and fiercely loyal, she formed life-long friendships with many of her classmates who were surprised that she even wanted to be a cheerleader.
Geneva was an independent woman and mother. After many years she retired from International Paper Company. She worked hard while raising her daughter as single mother, but able to provide for her well beyond the necessities of life, exceeding the equivalent of a two-parent home. She remained dedicated to her Christian beliefs and made sure Shanda also knew the Lord.
She was known to many as Clarice and affectionately called “Geneva Clarice” by her Texas family. Her quiet and soft demeanor was like a magnet that drew others to her. She enjoyed shopping, adult coloring and vacationing. Her granddaughters were the apple of her eyes and she made every moment with them special. In her spare time, she enjoyed the company of her family and close friends. She was quiet, but enjoyed to be entertained and particularly loved the competition associated with “Left, Right and Center”, playing cards and the hilarious bragging rights stemming from her frequent wins.
Her life was rewarding, full, and blessed. On Friday, December 3, 2021, she slipped the bonds of this life for a life in eternity. Her quiet and sweet spirit will never be duplicated but leaves an impression on the lives of those she touched and enriched along this life’s journey. Geneva Clarice was preceded in death by her parents, Sammy and Juanita Reed Hughes; her brother, Samuel Henry Hughes (2021); great-nieces, Amari M. Hughes (1998) and Toni Hughes (2021) and brother-in-law, Michael Evans (2021).
Her presence, her memory and love will be forever cherished by her daughter, LaShanda (Rockie) Carter of San Antonio, TX; her beloved granddaughters, Nadia Carter, Nina Carter and Naomi Carter all of San Antonio, TX; a special granddaughter, Katalaya Hughes; two special nephews she loved as her sons, Tyson Hughes and Lavar Hughes; her siblings, Lawrence Hughes of Arkadelphia, Jeffery Hughes of Sparkman, Sharon Evans of Little Rock, Shelia Giles (David) of Sparkman and Kassandra Reed (Robert) of Arkadelphia; bonus brother and sister, Linda Hughes of Sparkman and Maurice Jackson of Bearden; aunts, Lottie Wyatt of Kansas City, KS, Shirley Hughes of Sparkman, and Lisa Russell of Milwaukee, WI; and a special sister-in-law, Belinda Hughes of Arkadelphia. She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, a special friend, Brenda Johnson and several other friends.
Public visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.mn. on Friday, December 17, 2021 and the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
