James Craven

James Craven was born on November 19, 1925, in Prescott, Arkansas to the union of Brooks Craven and Mattie Redic Craven. He confessed a hope in Christ early in life and was a member of St. Luke AME Church in Prescott.

In 1959, he married the sweet Janie Morgan and their union was blessed with five children. He was a hard worker, having worked for Chevrolet Motors, Ford Motors, Firestone and finally retiring from Potlatch in Prescott.

He lived a modest and simple life all while enjoying hours of gardening. He spent most of his time sitting on the porch waving at cars coming and going. He was most known for riding his bike around Prescott. Everyone knew Mr. Craven as the gentle giant who never met a stranger.

After 96 seasons of life, he passed into the Lord’s embrace on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at Wadley Regional Medical Center in Hope, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janie Morgan Craven and his siblings, William Craven, Florence Evans and Bama Vanhook.

He leaves a legacy of love and memories with his children: Herbert (Lois) Adams, Janice Hill, Janet Easter all of Prescott, AR and Rodney Craven of Berlin, Germany; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. 

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Service will be held graveside at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 20, 2022, at Craven Cemetery (Hwy 24 East turn Right on County Road 240) with Elder Herbert Adams, officiating. 

Pallbearers will be Gabriel Adams, Carl Morgan, Jr., Brooks Craven, Daryl Woodley, Jerrold Craven, Eddie Gillard, Justin Craven and Courtney Craven. Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur Giles, Morris Craven, Carl Morgan, Colin Craven, Ray Craven, Jayden Craven, Lindsey Craven, William Craven and Herbert Adams, Jr.
