On November 25, 2024, Leonard Berg McCoy, affectionately known as Len Bird, departed this world, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and unwavering dedication to his family. Born on March 6, 1939, in Lester, Arkansas, to the late Will and Ida Curry McCoy, Len Bird was the youngest of eight children, including a sibling lost at birth, Len Bird grew up in a family rooted in faith and resilience. As a child, Leonard was lovingly called Biscuit, a nickname stemming from his habit of carrying biscuits to school in his pocket. This small detail perfectly captures the warmth and simplicity of his early years. Baptized at a young age at Mt. Willie Baptist Church in Bragg City, Arkansas, Len Bird’s faith remained a cornerstone of his life. As an adult, he spent 35 years as a devoted member of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Camden, Arkansas, before attending Tabernacle of Faith International.
A proud graduate of Lincoln High School’s Class of 1958, Len Bird demonstrated a lifelong commitment to hard work and integrity in everything he pursued. After graduation, he joined the Arkansas Department of Transportation, where his dedication and work ethic shone brightly over 35 years of service. Even in retirement, Len Bird maintained a disciplined routine, rising early for walks, tending to his manicured land, and enjoying his passion for hunting—a reflection of his steadfast nature and love for the outdoors.
On December 11, 1959, Len Bird married the love of his life, Patsy Ruth McCoy. Their remarkable 64-year union was a testament to love, perseverance, and faith. Together, they raised four children, building a foundation that would nurture generations.
Len Bird was preceded in death by his three brothers and four sisters, his beloved daughter Tammie Nell McCoy in 2007, his son Otis James McCoy in April 2024, and his devoted wife Patsy Ruth in May 2024. He is survived by his sons, Leonard C. McCoy and William S. McCoy Sr. (Nancy), his daughter-in-law Crystal McCoy, and his treasured grandchildren: Anika Spray (Bruce), Shalonda Johnson (Alvin), Cedric McCoy Sr., Lashunda Weaver, William McCoy Jr. (Tyronda), Cameron Williams, Isaac McCoy, Jasmine Collins (Mariano), Kiera McCoy, Justin McCoy, Jonathan McCoy, Tyra McCoy, Oren McCoy, and Ashton McCoy. He also leaves behind 18 great-grandchildren who will forever remember the stable home and strong foundation he built for them.
Len Bird’s love extended beyond his immediate family. Sharon Biddle, who became like a daughter to him, and his supportive sisters-in-law were by his side during life’s toughest moments. He cherished his lifelong friendship with Otis Gordon, the bond with his close cousin Charles Lowmack of Tempe, Arizona, and the affection of countless nieces and nephews who adored him.
Known by many names—Biscuit, Grouch, Grandpa, Papa, Dad—Len Bird was a man whose infectious laugh and steadfast presence will be deeply missed. As we say “see ya later,” we hold onto the memories of his unwavering dedication to his family and the love he poured into every role he held. Rest in sweet peace, Len Bird. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved you.\
