Samuel L. "Yogi" Rhodes

Samuel Lee Rhodes was born December 11, 1947 to Frank and Mammie Lee Ford Rhodes in Ouachita County. He passed from this life peacefully in the early morning hours of February 11, 2019 at his home in Camden.

Samuel accepted Christ at a young age and was a 1966 graduate of Union Grove High School. He was well known as “Yogi” and enlisted in the United States Army on January 10, 1968 and was a Vietnam Veteran. He attended Oil Belt Technical College, where he earned his Mechanical Certification. He was employed at Vaught Lockheed Martin for 19 years until his retirement.

He married the beautiful Carolyn Ann Nash on August 1, 1984 and they were married for 34 years until his passing. Yogi was a common man who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, but nothing could take the place of spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a life-long member of Velie Church of God in Christ and briefly joined Greater Love Church of God in Christ. While at Velie COGIC he became a deacon and later answered the call to be a Minister of the Gospel under the leadership of Elder Earl Green.

Samuel was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mammie Rhodes; a sister, Betty Morehead.

Minister Rhodes leaves lasting memories with his wife, Carolyn Rhodes; his sons, Kevin (Andrea) Rhodes, Glenn Nash, Jr.; his daughters, Angela Nash and Karen (Corey) Williams; nephews, Vincent Morehead, Michael Morehead, and Vernon Morehead; nieces, Sandra Harris, Mona Howard, Pamela Robinson and Vivian Goshen; his grandchildren, Glenn, III (Delilsha) Nash, Damon Charles, Destiny Bryant, Taliyah Nash, Kimberly Nash, Tyjalen Nash, Trinity Turner and Derrick Bryant, Jr.; a great-grandson, Braxton Nash; and a god-daughter, Tasia Isreal.

He also leaves a host of great nieces and nephews, other relatives, numerous friends and the Velie COGIC family.

Public visitation will be from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home Van Buren on Friday, February 15, 2019 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. The family hour will be from 6-7 p.m. at Velie COGIC on Friday, February 15, 2019.

A celebration of his life will be shared at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Greater Love Church of God in Christ, 447 Sycamore Ave SW in Camden. Interment will be at St. Paul Cemetery with military honors under the direction of Williams Funeral Home Van Buren 870-836-1121.

Pallbearers will be Richard Gill, Lonnie Gill, Kenneth Hill, Arthur Kelley, Joe Reed and Allen Wesley. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Morehead, Veron Morehead, Vincent Morehead, Glenn Nash, Jr., Glenn Nash, III., Damon Charles, T. W. Morris and Dereck Bryant, Jr.
