In the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus was asked which commandment in the law is the greatest. Jesus answered saying “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind, “and the second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This is the legacy of Thomas Alva Newburn. Thomas was born on May 11, 1939 in Arkadelphia, AR to the late James Tanner and Ruby Lee Newburn. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age, and was a life long member of the Mount Morriah Missionary Baptist Church. Thomas was a prayer warrior and faithfully served on the usher board and sang in the men’s choir. He was drafted and served in the United States Army. Upon completion of his enlistment, he was honorably discharged. After his military service, Thomas worked at the Acme Brick Company, Malvern AR and Morse Automotive Corp, Arkadelphia, AR. Thomas was a lifetime bachelor and devoted son, brother, uncle and friend. On December 25, 2021, as we celebrated the birth of Christ, the Lord called Thomas to enter his presence and spend eternity with him. Thomas leaves to cherish his memory four sisters: Bernice Newburn Seawood, Salado, TX; Mable Newburn House, Bryant, AR; Lillie Newburn Owens, Jacksonville, AR, and Marva Newburn Flowers; Alexander, AR. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, James (Jimmy) L. Newburn, and sister, Betty Ruth Newburn. Public Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, from 1:00-6:00PM at Williams Funeral Home, Arkadelphia, AR. Services will be held at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery, North Little Rock, AR pavilion with military honors, on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at 11:00AM with Rev. Vernon Moody, officiating.
