Her Story

It's my time for my story to be shared.

Velma Jean Newburn peacefully passed away on March 21, 2025, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock surrounded by her family members. She was born on October 2, 1950, in the Mt. Morriah Community of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, she devoted over 40 years of her life to serving as a dedicated Registered Nurse at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.

Affectionately known as “Jean,” she was the second child of Joel Edward and Mary Jane Seawood Newburn. A lifelong member of Mt. Morriah Missionary Baptist Church, she also fellowshiped within the Seventh Day Adventist congregation.

Jean proudly graduated from Peake High School in 1968 and subsequently pursued her nursing education at Baptist Nursing School and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. With her unwavering spirit and zest for life, Jean will be remembered not only for her impressive professional commitment but also for her vibrant personality. She was an active participant in the Red Hat Society, a social club for women that brought her much joy, and she cherished her association with the Peake Alumni Foundation, which fostered connections among friends and inspired younger generations.

Jean's adventurous spirit led her to explore more than 30 states, with a particularly memorable highlight being her attendance at the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama in 2012. Friends and family often sought her out for her thoughtful gardening advice, as she possessed a talent for sewing. Her creative pursuits included crafting unique items such as pillows, scarves, blankets, and masks for others during the COVID-19 pandemic, each piece stitched with care and affection.

In her leisure time, Jean enjoyed shopping for treasures for herself and others. She was an enthusiastic supporter of women’s sports, including the WNBA, WNCAA, and championship wrestling, reflecting her spirited competitive nature.

Jean is reunited with her beloved son, her “Buddy,” Derrick Dupree Newburn, who was born on January 7, 1973, and passed away on September 22, 1999. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Joel and Mary Jane Seawood Newburn; her niece, Brandy Ferrell, who left this world on June 9, 1985; and her brother-in-law, Rev. Richard Harris.

Her life and legacy will continue to be cherished by her family, Thelma Harris of Little Rock, AR; Alvin (Edna) Newburn, Edward (Deborah) Newburn, Belinda Hughes, and Ester (Samuel) Mitchell, all of Arkadelphia, AR; Linda Todd and Ricky (Frances) Seawood of Little Rock, AR; Connie Kidd of Tucson, AZ; a nephew whom she regarded as a son, LaRon Hughes, Ph.D.; as well as her uncle, Alfred Jerry Smith, aunt, Bernice Newburn Seawood, and cherished friend, Ray Tippen of Little Rock, AR. Additionally, she leaves behind a supportive network of nieces, nephews, numerous cousins, and the Mt. Morriah Missionary Baptist Church Family.

As we honor and reflect on the invaluable contributions Jean made to our lives, we are reminded to embrace the joy, passion, and love she generously shared. While her physical presence may be missed, her enduring legacy will continue to inspire and uplift all those fortunate enough to have known her.
