Vernetta was born on June 16, 1949 to Earnest and Elizabeth Carr in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. She was the second of six children born to this union. Her Christian journey began at a young age at New Bethel Baptist Church in Arkadelphia where she served with the youth usher board and a member of the choir.
She was a 1967 graduate of Peake High School. She continued her higher education at Henderson State University. She later moved to Tacoma, Washington where she completed a bachelor’s degree at Evergreen State College.
Vernetta was a member of Tacoma Christian Center where she served as the youth director and in other various positions. She was an employee of the State of Washington where she worked for the Department of Human Services for forty-five years. She made many friends in Tacoma, some became as close as brothers and sisters. Last summer, she joined some of her high school classmates in Las Vegas to celebrate thei 50th class reunion. They share memories, enjoyed dining, shopping and seeing one another.
Vernetta “Ma’Dear” was greeted to her eternal home on July 28, 2018 by her parents; her brothers, Verner Carr (2006), Lornell Carr (2011) and her sister, Janetta Carr Buckley (2001). She will be missed, and is loved by many family & friends.
She leaves to cherish her memories; one son, Luciano (Tangy) Sweet of Dallas, TX; one daughter, Jameka Sweet of New Orleans, LA; grandchildren, Daishanea Sweet-Fredrick, Jazzmyn, Luciano, JR., Jaina Sweet and Raymond Robinson, III.; her sisters, Marshel (Joe) Johnson of Arkadelphia, AR and Muriel “Mimi” Carr of Tacoma, WA; sisters-in-law, Eddie Carr of Pine Bluff, AR and Beverly Sweet of Tulsa, OK. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relative and friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 10, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at The Valley Chapel at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood, Washington.
