“To God Be the Glory, Great Things He Has Done!”
Virginia Ann Charles was born December 15, 1952 to the union of Henry C. and Virginia Mae Giles in Gurdon, AR. She was the second born of what eventually became a big family of nine. She accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of the choir at Eastern Star Baptist Church in the Smithton community. Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, in Gurdon, AR later became her place of worship.
She was a 1970 graduate of Bell High School in Gurdon, AR. She then went into the workforce early, and along the way she worked at Bowen’s Restaurant, spent many years at the Clark County Sheriff's Dept where one of her former co-workers, Rev. Derek Flowers said “she did it all!” She also spent several years at Gurdon Middle School, and up until a couple years ago, a caretaker.
“Ann” as many called her, always greeted you with her infectious smile and when you needed an encouraging word she always knew just what to say. With just a few words she touched so many lives. She was a God-fearing woman who took pride in everything she did, even raising her children Quincy and Aaron. Later she was blessed to have a grandson Aaron Jr. who she loved on and taught life lessons. She was full of faith and believed until her last day on this Earth. Despite everything she went through she was persistent and believed in something higher than herself. Her relationship became even deeper with God after going through obstacles where most would have given up. She kept going even when the road wasn’t easy.
She loved reading her Bible, watching Hallmark movies, and doing word search puzzles. Wherever she went she was a light and a force to be reckoned with. She didn’t waiver on sharing news about the goodness of God and all he had done for her and her family. ‘Til the day God called her home her mantra was “To God Be the Glory! Sweet Jesus!”
She passed from this life on August 22, 2024, in Little Rock, AR. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Henrietta Stitt and Ladonna Gail Williams, her brother, Earnest “Pokey” Giles, and Bobby Joe Charles whom she married in 2004.
She leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, Quincy Charles (Luis) of St. Louis, MO & Aaron Charles of Gurdon, AR; One grandson, Aaron Charles, Jr. of Jacksonville, AR; Two brothers, James (Monica) Giles, Phillip (Vinita) Giles, and three sisters, Gearlene (Tex) Killingsworth of Arkadelphia, AR, Carolyn Crow (Marshall Watson) of Hot Springs, AR, and Amy Giles of Gurdon, AR. She also leaves two uncles James Lee Giles & Augusta (Bobbie) Giles of Lansing, Michigan and a host of nieces, nephews, step-children, cousins, and countless friends.
